Fern

Raven Fern is a “Texas 56’er” rescued by CDRN, and she joined my fur family on May 2, 2021. Over the past three years, Fern has progressed from an underweight timid dog into a beautiful, silly, and opinionated diva; it has been such a joy to watch her confidence grow!

Fern loves trucks rides, going to handling class with her brother, Phoenix, and walking and hiking adventures. Her newfound confidence is exemplified by her preference for certain treats (hot dogs) and dislike for steep inclines.

Fern’s adoption was finalized once she completed her medical treatments. Since then, she has embraced the world of performance dog sports! Fern participated in the CDCA and ICDCA National Specialties and successfully ran her first Fast CAT trial in 2023. Most recently, she earned her Barn Hunt Instinct (RATI) title (see article in the Spring 2024 ICDCA Desert Tracks newsletter), and she's working towards AKC Fit Dog and Fast CAT titles.

Fern was extremely proud to represent Canaan Dogs at the January 2024 Meet the Breeds event in New York. We took it slowly to introduce her to such a hectic venue, but she did her best and everyone who met her adored her!

Fern retains many unusual quirks because of her background (she doesn’t understand many verbal commands and needs reminders that “food isn’t love”) but she has no difficulty at all in her most important role: she knows how to keep her buddy Phoenix in line as only a female Canaan Dog knows how to!
