Caleb

Caleb joined our family in San Francisco, California in 2013 via United Airlines from Hatikva Canaan Dogs in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. With family property in Pt. Reyes, an hour north of San Francisco within the National Seashore, Caleb has had access to three fenced acres since three months of age, exacerbating his expansive sense of territory. We also lost the battle early on in terms of ‘puppy rules’, permitting Caleb to sleep not only on the bed but at the top of the bed with his head on a pillow! Despite these early permitted transgressions, he has developed into a fine, six-year-old Canaan, enjoying his daily walks along National Seashore trails, as well as lounging with the family around the house, often curled up by the wood stove. He is a beloved member of our family, and we relish our times together.

As for attributes, Caleb is alert, attentive, loyal and playful. He sounds the alarm upon the arrival of guests or journeymen to the gate and sits steadfast at the sides of my parents when others are present, especially at my mother’s side who is wheel chair bound. He is cognizant of the needs of elders (e.g., walking sticks, canes, walkers), minds mealtimes, and cares for all. Wary of other dogs, he is quite playful with people, doing his tricks on command for morning treats and romping gregariously around the yard. His preferred ‘spot’ in the house is high on an ottoman.

Caleb also has a keen sense of smell, having delivered a dead vole and chipmunks to the back door of the house, as well as cornering his first wood rat last month!

Notable are Caleb’s shyness towards water and lack of retrieval. He keeps to the dunes at the beach, avoiding the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. He dallies crossing creeks lest his paws touch the water. In play, he often prefers entering into a session of hide and seek with a ball, stick, or deer antler (his favorite toy) rather than throw, retrieve it, and throw it again.

In the Old Testament, Caleb was one of two loyal spies sent by Moses to Jericho; he reportedly turned black when he prayed ardently. Caleb’s name also is an Anglicized version of Kelev, Hebrew for “dog”. Caleb is black with white tuxedo markings including white paws and a white-tipped tail. Grateful for our membership in the ICDCA, we appreciate the opportunity to share of our pride and joy with you and yours.
